Costa Rica
A wide variety of waves line the 735 mile coastline of Costa Rica, and moving from one break to another is considered by many to be THE way to surf Costa Rica. Some choose to lock into a comfy hotel with hot water, A/C, TV, all the amenities, and a short stroll to the beach, while others seek a more basic level of creature comforts and associated budget control in order to maximize their days riding the waves.
Waves & WeatherCosta Rica is a well known and well developed surfing destination - especially since featuring in Endless Summer 2. Direct flights from the USA also add to its popularity. The country is safe, beautiful, friendly and blessed with great surfing on both coasts.
The surfing can be broken into three main areas: The Pacific North (Guanacaste-Nicoya), the Pacific South (Punta Arenas) and the Caribbean. Surf towns are developing in places such as Jaco, Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo. Year round warm water, warm air and offshore breezes (in Guanacaste) make for great conditions. The best waves occur in the rainy season (northern Hemisphere 'summer') on the pacific side, and in the hot dry season ('winter') on the Caribbean - ensuring that you should be able to find surf someplace.
We offer a wide range of hotels from Guanacaste, down to Punta Arenas with a variety of comfort levels depending on your particular needs. We can put together a custom tailored package for you just about anywhere you want to go in Costa Rica.
Some of the more popular surf destinations are Tamarindo, Nosara, Jaco, Hermosa, Dominical, and Pavones. The dry season runs Dec – Apr and the rainy season is May – Nov.

Transfers can be arranged for those not wishing to deal with the drive.
THE SURF (NORTH)
Ollie's Point
Right point break with fast, long and powerful waves. For the experienced surfer. Needs a strong swell from the southwest or northwest to break.
Witches Rock (Playa Naranjo)
Fast, hollow rights and lefts. Can get epic.
Playa Tamarindo
There are a variety of good surf spots in Tamarindo Bay. The Tamarindo Rivermouth is a solid right-hand wave. Other quality local waves: Pico Pequeno – mellow reef break; Old Man’s – good longooard wave; and Playa Langosta – fun outside reef and inside beachbreak.
Playa Grande
Powerful beachbreak waves with steep hollow faces that tube in some sections. Very playful waves, good for high-performance surfing.
Playa Negra
Hollow right rock reefbreak that's one of the better tubes in Costa Rica.
Nosara
The main spots in this region are: Playa Guinoes, a really fun beach break that is good for all ability levels; and Playa Pelada, which features 3 reef breaks that are good for more experienced surfers
Mal Pais
Mal Pais can get big. Playa Carmen and Play Santa Teresa are the main beach breaks in this area. Punta Barrigona is a short and weak left-hand point break at Mar Azul Hotel & Bar. Los Suecos is a powerful reefbreak near the Sunset Reef Hotel.
THE SURF (CENTRAL)
Boca Barranca
Boca Barranca is a fun left point break that peels for a half mile. Boca Baranca is the second longest peeling wave in Costa Rica. Pavones is the longest, and should not be missed. If surfing here, be sure to check the tides, as wave quality can change drastically with tide.
Playa Escondido
Right and left peeling reef break that produces thick, speedy walls that can get hollow. Best for more experienced surfers.
Jaco
Fun beach break where many beginners ride their first wave in Costa Rica.
Hermosa
The most consistent surf spot in Costa Rica. Very powerful beachbreak waves that tend to close out on larger swells. Lots of surfboard break here, so come prepared.
Esterillos
Normal-size but somewhat weak waves are fun and break both left and right. Similar to Hermosa but less surfers.
THE SURF (SOUTH)
Dominical
Head high to double overhead waves are surefire year round for fast surfing on hollow and powerful waves. When too big, head to the point. Good chance of breaking a board here.
Matapalo
Awesome right-hand point-break that peels for over 200 yards. There are plenty of fast, hollow sections on this wave.
Pan Dulce
Right-hand point break that peels and tubes for 500 yards on a great day. It is a very fickle wave, and needs a large swell to start breaking.
Pavones
This is one of the longest left-hand point break waves in the world. Very fast waves, with long walls that require high-performance surfing.
